Restaurants and Food Manufacturers

Kathy Thornburg

As a food allergy mom, I have learned that no food or experience in life comes without risk. When I feed my child a new food or take him to a new place, I am putting my trust in companies and people I do not know. That is scary! If I had the attention of restaurants and food manufacturers, I would want them to know just how much families living with food allergies want and need transparency from the companies they support. I think my letter would go a little something like this...

Please be open and clear when it comes to the ingredients you use and the way you handle food. If you are willing to listen to your customers’ concerns and communicate with them honestly, you will gain lifelong customers (if your foods are safe for our specific allergies) who will gladly tell others about your awesome products! Withholding important information from a family with food allergies, often makes us feel you have something to hide and many will choose not to take the risk of consuming a product that may not be safe. Also, educate those who work within your business about proper safety precautions to exercise with food allergies. When your employees show my family compassion and understanding, your restaurant and products jump to the top of our list!

What are your favorite restaurants that have gone the extra mile to accommodate your food allergy needs? What product brands have become staples in your home, and why do you choose them over other brands?
