About Us

We are not allowed to share many details about our daughter until our adoption is finalized. This is why there are no images of her face anywhere on our website or social media.

The Thornburg Family

TROY

Troy likes coffee (seriously…he’s a bit obsessed) and his glorious beard. He enjoys his work in the non-profit realm, helping churches and families launch student-led Bible studies on middle and high school campuses.

Check out Youth Commission International and reach out to Troy with any questions about this ministry at troy@yciclubs.com

KATHY

Kathy is a graphic designer who helps businesses with their design needs, marketing, and social media management. She gravitates towards anything creative or artistic. Kathy enjoys baking, creating videos, snapping pictures, and learning Chinese.

To contact Kathy about your social media, marketing, and business design needs, you can email her at contact@kathythornburg.com or fill out the contact form on the website here.

MILO

Milo is a LEGO enthusiast, big time book reader, podcast listener, and code cracking expert. His intelligence is off the charts, and his math skills are impressive. He is a skilled gamer and is always interested in trying out a new board game.

EDEN

Eden is very independent and always has an opinion to share. She is a vegetarian (sometimes). Eden is an amazing artist and has a huge heart for all animals. She also is very passionate about the environment and plans to make a big difference in the world.

MOLLY

Molly is our sweet daughter living in China. She was supposed to join our family in February 2020, but our travels were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We pray daily that we will be allowed to travel and bring her home soon. Due to privacy rules, we cannot share much about her until our adoption is finalized. If you would like to learn more about our adoption journey and see how you can join us in the wait, check out our adoption page.

OUR CONNECTION TO JOHNSON UNIVERSITY

Troy and Kathy are both alumni of Johnson Bible College (now Johnson University). We met and married during our time living in Knoxville, Tennessee. We had a wonderful college experience, and were interviewed for the Sojournal alumni podcast. To learn more about our lives from childhood to current day, check out of two part podcast.

PART TWO EPISODE

OUR CONNECTION TO FOOD ALLERGIES

In February of 2013, our son was diagnosed with food allergies. After an allergic reaction to peanut butter and some blood tests, we found he not only had a severe peanut allergy but also moderate allergies to dogs, walnuts (now outgrown), egg whites (now outgrown), and wheat (now outgrown). In 2015, he was also diagnosed with asthma.

In 2021-2022, Milo went through an OIT (oral immunotherapy) program with our local allergist to be able to safely consume peanuts despite being allergic. He still needs to carry his emergency meds, but going through this desensitization process has changed our lives in a positive way and allowed Milo to eat many things he previously needed to avoid.

OUR CONNECTION TO MENTAL HEALTH

In the Fall of 2016, we discovered that Troy had been struggling for much of his life with anxiety and depression. After losing a ministry job our family depended on as our primary source of income, we quickly hit a new low. Through many conversations, we uncovered Troy did not process information or emotions in a way that was typical, and we started to suspect he would benefit from specialized support. We sought out professional counseling for both of us individually, and Troy was referred to a licensed psychiatrist who diagnosed him with depression after a thorough evaluation. He continued to go through counseling and was prescribed a medication to help his body do what other bodies do naturally on a chemical level in his brain.

OUR CONNECTION TO INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION

In May of 2016, we submitted our application to start our adoption journey. We had no idea that all these years later, we would still be working and waiting to complete that adoption.

Over the years, we hit several roadblocks that delayed our adoption progress and caused it to take much longer than expected. Through unexpected job loss, a mental health diagnosis, months of counseling, government delays, and a global pandemic, we have stayed committed to the adoption of our daughter waiting in China. We hope that our wait is nearing an end, so we can finally have our family together.
